Lightning Labs Gets $10 Million In Funding
Lightning Labs, which is the developer of the high-speed transaction protocol Lightning Network (LN), has secured $10 million in Series A funding round. The news was announced by Lightning Labs CEO and co-founder, Elizabeth Stark, in a blog post on Feb. 5. The company plans to allocate the raised funds to further development of the Lightning payments technology and scaling of its developer ecosystem.
IBM Leads The Way On The Number Of AI And Blockchain Patents
Tech giant IBM has cemented its patent leadership in the United States, with over 9,000 received patents, including in artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain, in 2019. With the 9,626 patents secured, IBM became the company that received the most patents in the U.S.ever and the leader on the list for the 27th consecutive year, tech-focused media outlet Database Trends and Applications reported on Feb. 4. Of the 9,626 patents, IBM secured over 1,800 patents in AI, more than 2,500 patents in cloud technology and led in blockchain patents received.
Binance Allows Users To Buy Assets With Russian Currency
Binance, which is the second-largest crypto exchange by daily trading volume, has enabled instant purchases of four major digital currencies with the Russian ruble. The development allows Binance users to link their Visa banking card and purchase Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Binance Coin (BNB) and XRP with the ruble, according to a Feb. 5 announcement. The exchange claims that users can complete a purchase in less than a minute and do not have to make deposits prior to purchase.
Telegram Launches Catchain
A recent paper authored by Nikolai Durov, a Telegram co-founder, lays out the details of Telegram Open Network’s consensus mechanism, named Catchain. The proposed solution is a Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) Proof of Stake (PoS) algorithm, similar to that used by NEO or Cosmos. BFT algorithms are attempted solutions to solve the Byzantine Generals problem, where actors of a particular network need to maintain its functionality even if some nodes are unreliable or malicious
Iowa Democratic Caucus Disaster May Help Blockchain
The application that was recently used in the Iowa Democratic caucus was “not mobile voting,” This is according to major blockchain voting firm Voatz. The mobile software designed to calculate votes in the Iowa Democratic caucus on Feb. 3 has become the center of discussion after an alleged error in the smartphone app resulted in the Democrats delaying all public reporting of the results of Monday’s caucuses. According to a report by the Associated Press, Democratic party officials in Iowa have since blamed an unknown “coding issue” with the software that led to producing only “partial and unreliable results.” As reported, the application was created by a little-known company called Shadow that was founded by executives of Hillary Clinton’s unsuccessful presidential campaign.
